What Can I Do?Many community members are unaware that individual activities can significantly improve the invisible atmosphere that surrounds us. There are numerous actions, both organizational and individual, that can help improve air quality while at home, at work, or while on the road. All of the suggested actions work toward reducing hydrocarbon emissions (VOCs and NOx). Emission reductions help prevent the formation of ground-level ozone, a major component of smog, that can have serious health effects. On days when there is a high weather-related potential to create ground-level ozone, meteorologists declare Ozone Action days (see How Forecasting Works). On these days, and everyday, the West Michigan Clean Air Coalition encourages everyone to join together and voluntarily implement emission reduction behaviors at work, home, or in your vehicle in an effort to reduce emissions and clear the air. The West Michigan Clean Air Coalition is a partnership of businesses, academic institutions, government agencies, industry, and non-profit organizations in Kent, Ottawa, Muskegon, and Kalamazoo counties working together to achieve cleaner air in the region through the education and promotion of voluntary emission reduction activities. |
